-- at least three people are dead following a line of storms in alabama. multiple reports of tornadoes int hat area. according to depuites -- they were all in a mobile home together, another person in that home critically injured. a number of other people also hurt and more than a dozen buildings have been destroyed. onto the white house transition -- we're getting a better idea of what a donald trump presidency will look like. we expect donald trump to announce more members of his cabinet today. yesterday iowa senator chuck grassley met with senator jeff sessions -- trump's choice for attorney general. tracie potts has a look at the announcements we can expect today -- and the positions still open. he's also said to visit indiana to announce 1000 factory jobs staying in the u.s. tracie potts, nbc news, washington. this morning, we'll learn the third -- and final -- candidate in the running to become u-n-i's next president. today, there's a public forum with jim wohlpart. he's been serving as interim president since bill ud campus. he believes the university needs to work towards recruiting a diverse student body, restructuring admission practices and revisiting how standardized test scores are used. he resigned from his post at temple university earlier this year... "this summer i was directed to provost who was strongly opposed to the appointment. i chose not to break the covenant of shared

to be essential in operating a university." we did some digging and got a copy of the letter the temple board of trustees sent to the community. they say they found 22-million dollars in deficit in the univeristy's budget were theobald's responsibility and felt he must be held accountable. lottery fixing case. intestigators now believe the men could have fixed more games -- had the conspiracy not been discovered.. eddie tipton worked for the iowa lottery. he's accused of fixing games to win - he's set to go on trial in february. his brother tommy also charged in the case and is set to stand trial in texas in january. a child found outside in pajamas and no shoes. a week later -- her mother faces charges.

alone - and another child belonging to the woman were placed in the care of human services. brakes fail -- a car crashes into a business. it happened at mulgrew's tavern in east dubuque, illinois yesterday. people were inside at the time. a man who lives right above the tavern heard it happen. "it was just like a loud cannon door of the mulgrew's bar." some injuries. she was taken to a hospital, but has since been released. everyone else is okay. drivers in the tri-states likely hoping for an easier commute today. the julien dubuque bridge closed down yesterday following a five-car crash. some people had to be taken to the hospital but police say they're all expected to survive. two people are seriously hurt after a crash involving a semi. it happened on highway 63 south of hudson yesterday. the black hawk county sheriff's office says a car tried to pass

hit a truck going the other way. both the driver in the car and the driver in the truck were taken to the hospital. a wrong-way crash on a busy highway shows us once again -- how dangerous the job of law enforcement is... every day. kwwl's amanda gilbert joins us live outside the waterloo police department. tell us about that crash, amanda. waterloo police officer mark nissen has minor injuries... after a crash on highway 20 yesterday around 4:30 in the morning. headed towards his squad car near the ansborough exit... but was unable to get out of the way in time. when the crash happened -- nissen had his emergency lights and siren on.. this officer was actually responding to calls of a wrong-way driver on highway 20... he knew he may be headed towards a dangerious situation... shows that our men and women in blue risks their lives every day

just this year.. two police officers in des moines were killed after a wrong-way driver crashed into them. live in waterloo... amanda gilbert... news 7 kwwl. the other driver in the crash... 27- year-old erick james anderson... was charged with an o-w-i second offense... no insurance.... failure to have control... and driving on the wrong side of the road. one person is dead and three others hurt after a car crashes -- going off a freeway -- then landing on a homeless camp. police say at least one person was trapped under the car in los angeles. no word yet what led up to the crash. the truck driver who crashed into a van carrying comedian tracy morgan in 2014 pleads guilty. he was driving a wal-mart truck when he crashed into morgan's van on the new jersey turnpike. morgan suffered serious injuries in the crash and comedian james

she didn't win the crown -- but the pageant contestant is being called a winner. she was the first person to compete in miss minnesota u-s-a wearing a hijab and a burkini during the swimsuit portion of the competition. since people found out about her story-- sh'es received messages from women around the world supporting her. "this is a big win for us you and being celebrated so i'm just challenging you to be outgoing and just do your best in everything that you do." she went up against 44 other woman and made it to the top 15. a worthy cause -- with too many donations. a police department in wisconsin gives stuffed animals to kids when they respond to a call -- a car crash, a fire -- wbhatever the case may be. they've received so many donations -- they have too many. now they're starting a program they're calling "stuffed hugs" any kid who walks into the

a laundry service donated its time to clean all the animals before they get handed out. a goat's anxiety -- calmed by an old duck costume. her owner says she put the old costume on the goal as a joke. the next thing she knew, the anxiety was gone and polly was as happy as a clam. the woman later posted a pie online that went viral. a big story this morning: a standoff in a snowstorm. protesters in north dakota have been told to leave. people have been showing up to support the standing rock sioux tribe -- which is upset about the dakota access pipeline. they're worried the pipeline will damage their water supply. yasmin amer tells us about the governor's evacuation order with winter on the way. after nearly vefi months of protest, pressure...telling demonstrators to leave now or face the consequences. but neither the official warnings nor the howling winter weather seem convincing. the morton county sheriff's department warned protesters tuesday that they'll start blocking supplies and people from entering the campsite. a spokeswoman for the department later clarified that they'd only stick to punishing trespassers. mebemrs of the standing rock sioux tribe...who originally filed the lawsuit against the pipeline...say they're not budging. "water is sacred. but,

to protect your water resource." north dakota governor jack dalrymple warned protesters about the winter weather - which will only get worse. he said that first responders will no longer be responsible for rendering aid to those who stay 17 native americans, who've served under the obama administration, signed a letter asking the president to step in - and allow protesters to stay. the c-e-o of the company building the pipeline is also weighing in - trying to convince protesters the pipeline will be safe. "this pipeline is being built where to existing pipelines exist today, that were built through your state in 1982. we've not disturbed any historical sites." i'm yasmin amer reporting. the pipeline would also run through iowa. two pipeline protesters, who chained themselves to equipment in iowa, are now behind bars. they ran past security to the construction site in pilot mound. that's in boone county -- in central iowa. they chained their wrists

state patrol plane was called in to search for others in the group. take...and we are willing to take those risks and put our lives on the line because we deeply believe water is life therefore we must do everything in our human capacity to protect it." there aren't a lot of active pipeline construction sites left in iowa. the area along the des moines river is the one of the last sections in central iowa that's why protesters are focusing on it. no one got hurt when a pipeline exploded in missouri. this video shows the huge fire in platte state. the pipeline's owned by enterprise products partners -- out of louisiana. the company says the pipeline moves an ethane--propane mix from kansas. new details after a waterloo police officer risks his life to protect and serve. he's now out of the hospital with minor injuries.

-- as they try to keep us safe. kwwl's amanda gilbert joins us live in waterloo... you can tell us more about what happened. waterloo police officer mark nissen responding to calls about a wrong-way driver on highway 20. he headed toward the area where the driver was- knowing he was headed toward a dangerous situation. unable to get out in-time. nissen's car was hit head on shortly after 4:30 in the morning... the officer was taken to allen hospital with minor injuries. officer nissen is now out of the hospital... but will be given a few days at home to rest. live in waterloo, amanda gilbert, news 7 kwwl. even a routine call for officers can become dangerous. here's another example from last week -- two cedar rapids police officers taken to the hospital

them while they responded to another crash on the highway. the officers are ok but the the people in the other car died, matrell watson was 22 years old. his family now trying to figure "she loves him a lot you know all of her preschool stuff and picked her up from daycare." kaitlyn hall also died in the crash. continuing coverage -- working towards a solution. people come together in waterloo to talk about vioelence. this year the city's seen three murders -- all victims under the age of 23. community members want to know how they can help. the naacp held a work session to try to come up with solutions. "these kids need somebody. they d'ton need us to just talk all day and everyday about what we can and can't do. we can change this community.

the groups filled out forms with their ideas and set up work groups to start implementing the from serious brain injury -- to tossing a ball around. doctors in awe of the miraculous recovery seven-year-old leighton pullin crossed the street without looking both ways and got hit by a pickup truck last month. he had numerous brain surgeries..and was in a medically induced coma for weeks. he still can't speak -- but can respond to questions with a thumbs up or a thumbs down. with some help, he's sitting up and can even toss back a ball.. his grandma is calling it nothing short of a miracle. cant tell you what it feels like..it's wonderful. if you ever want to see a miracle, this is a miracle. we never thought we would see this, just a week ago

his doctors and nurses are taking things day by day.. time now is xxx. a kwwl follow-up this morning. the ohio state community comes together for a "buckeye strong" event on campus. this comes after someone plowed a car into people, then started slashing with a knife. eleven people got hurt. the university president urging people to move forward in a spirit happen that are unfortunate or that are hurtful to us. when those things happen, what really works for us is to come together in the spirit of unid our buckeye community to think clearly about that. an officer shot and killed the suspect. a vigil held in honor of an officer killed in the line of duty. fellow officers call collin rose a great talent and a great officer for the community. the wayne state university university officer was shot while on patrol.

former police officer -- now charges with murder -- takes the stand to defend himself. michael slager is charged in the shooting death of walter scott, who was not armed. slager has said he stopped scott for a broken tail light... then scott took off running. slager says he was in fear for did he ever give you any indication of compliance or surrender? no. not at all. and what did you do next? at that time i... i pulled my trigger. the shooting happened last year. an oklahoma police officer who shot and killed an unarmed man in september will stand trial for manslaughter. the officer says the man did not follow her instructions and she thought he was trying to get a weapon from his car. police videos showed him with his arms in the air before the shooting. investigators never found any weapons in his car, but say he was high on drugs.

buildings have burned in the tennessee wildfires. the national park service says the fires have burned 15-thousand acres so far. the mayor of gatlinburg -- who lost his own home -- says his thing to watch... "it happened so fast it was staggering when you've got wind up to 87 miles an hour pushing fire, i mean people were basically running for their lives." spa -- with more than 100 buildings -- has likely been destroyed.. the flames came extremely close to dollywood... but the theme park was spared significant damage. the park is closed until friday. employees plan to focus their efforts the next two days on supporting the community. now to the transition in washington. today, the democrats -- fresh

leaders. nancy pelosi has been the house democratic leader for 12-years. today she faces a challenge by congressman tim ryan of ohio. ryan says it's time for a change in party leadership. he says the party has the right policies, but not the right message. outgoing vice president joe biden will be honored on the senate floor next month by senators from both sides of the political aisle. senator chris coons led the charge to honor biden. coons holds the same seat from delaware that biden held for more than three decades -- before becoming done by hand -- in wisconsin. green party presidential candidate jill stein has been calling for the recount of the presidential vote in that state. a judge says the recount will begin today -- but it will be done by a machine. the judge saying stein's attorney did not prove a hand recount was necessary. mitt romney is now praising the president-elect months after calling donald trump a phony. romney had dinner with trump
